Bomen en wij - eco art neuroscience performance
BOMEN EN WIJ is an eco-art-neuroscience performance that takes place in nature and brings the restorative power of the natural world – trees in particular – to the heart of urban life.
A blend of performance, lecture and contemporary dance, BOMEN EN WIJ explores the deep connections between trees, the human brain and emotional wellbeing. A dancer and a neuroscientist perform among the seated audience in a natural setting, creating an immersive, interactive experience that brings together art, science and nature.
The dancer's slow, deliberate movements – rooted in mindful and somatic practice – mirror the rhythm of brain waves, activating the parasympathetic nervous system and relieving stress. As the neuroscientist shares insights into how forest environments stimulate alpha brain wave activity, promoting calmness and emotional balance, the audience experiences these effects in real time. Through voice and movement, the duo invites a deep sense of presence and tranquillity.
This performance is based on their field research, including heart rate variability (HRV) measurements and empathy-based questionnaires, which demonstrate how natural environments positively influence mental states and well-being. Based on neuroscience, embodied movement and the healing power of nature, BOMEN EM WIJ offers a unique, calming experience that invites reflection, reduces stress and nourishes both body and mind.

As part of the project, the public is also invited to participate in a mindful movement workshop in nature. Participants explore the qualities of a tree – rooted, resilient and alive to change – through simple, accessible movements. The neuroscientist offers live heart measurements for those who want to learn more about the connection between the brain, heart and consciousness in the present moment. The workshop is accessible to all ages and body types and requires no prior experience or special preparation.
